COMING TOGETHER / COMING APART is a series of twelve paintings composed of eighteen individual panels connected with metal press studs. Together, they mimic a modular t-shirt that can be assembled and reassembled into different configurations. The series grew out of a central question: How can a painter function and engage the viewer when access to conventional platforms and methods is limited or restricted? Addressing this question required a return to fundamentals, asking what constitutes a painting and what constitutes an exhibition. The resulting work reconsiders these notions, and proposes an alternative approach to creating and exhibiting a painting. It bypasses institutional gatekeeping, and imagines a new way for artists to remain independent, collaborate, and connect with audiences beyond conventional frameworks.
